Our "New" Couch, and freecycle

We got rid of our two sofas yesterday. We brought them to the dump. We thought about giving them away on freecycle (see more info on freecycle below), but after potty training we just couldn't give them away. One of Brian's coworkers had a couch that they weren't using and that they were planning to offer on freecycle, so I spoke up and said we'd like it. So we have a new couch, but like the old ones it was free, but unlike the old ones, this one is a quality couch (Thanks TJ and Kay). Travis came up to Brian and said "thanks for the new couch Dad."So if you haven't heard of freecycle, you should check it out. It's kind of like recycling. You go to freecycle.org and locate the freecycle group nearest you (chances are your town has one or two already established). Then you request to join that group. The group is an email group where people offer things for free. You can offer anything you want to get rid of and it's understood that the person who responds will come pick it up. People offer couches, TV's, children's clothes and toys, lawn mowers, stereos, moving boxes, books, and anything else you can think of. We have received a Power Wheels jeep, a playground structure, books, electronic equipment and firewood. You can even post emails to request things (that's how we got our firewood). When you post an email to the group, you don't have to list any contact info since the group can respond by email. Then you arrange pick up details one on one. We have even offer things and left them on the porch for first come first serve (and they went fast). Some groups, we're heard, can be too large (like in big cities) and it's hard to respond fast enough to get things, but in small towns like here, your chances are quite good. Give it a try!

You can find your local freecycle groups and see them on a map at finder.overcycle.com

Nice couch! Isn't freecycle great? I haven't ever used it in Salt Lake, but it's great in Los Alamos!

Hi. Nice couch!!

I note your comment about Freecycle getting too big in the big cities. Freecycle really can be very chaotic. I'm also not a fan of moderation.

I have started using another site www.scoodi.com which achieves the same thing but is much easier to search. You can set up alerts which will let you know by email or RSS when something you want is listed.
