Great Sand Dunes

For the kids' spring break we decided to do a family vacation to southern Colorado to see the Great Sand Dunes and the Colorado Gators near Alamosa, CO.  On our way to the dunes we saw a small herd of bison off of the road.  Brian quickly jumped out of the car to get a closer view (there was a fence between him and the bison still and he zoomed way in).

Apparently it's a rare sight to see them around here.  The rangers said they usually have them elsewhere since one time one of them ran into the mail lady's car.

Here's a shot of the dunes with the boys and Angela barely visible in the distance.

It was so amazing to see these huge dunes with the large rocky mountains in the background.

Lucas and Brian climbed all the way to the top of them and it took them 45 minutes to climb up.  Here's the view from the top.  Angela, Travis, and Marcus (slightly left of the photo's center) are actually in the photo but are very small.

Here's Lucas on top at one of the few grassy patches you'll see.

The grassy patch is in the background and we climbed up a few more dunes to get to a geocache location.

After their adventure to the top, they joined the rest of the family.  Marcus had had it and was tired so Brian took him back to the van and he fell right asleep.  Travis and Lucas built a sand city.

Brotherly love!  They look like they're in the middle of nowhere.  It makes you think "Got Water!"

Here's the family at the main sign at the entrance with the dunes and the mountains in the background.  A beautiful place.  Very windy, and perhaps late spring or summer is a better time to visit to see the water than run over the bottom of the dunes.

The video gives you the idea of how windy it was.  You can see the sand blowing and how these dunes move around.
