A Geocaching Experience to Remember

From the outset I'll admit that this wasn't the greatest idea I've ever had. Angela had a meeting tonight and so I took the boys out geocaching. I often do that when I have the boys to myself. I decided to try to climb the mountain peak near our house to find a cache that I've been wanting to get. It was a 0.33 mile hike as the crow flies, but included nearly a 1000 foot climb at a 45 degree slope to a peak elevation of 8000 feet. So I carried Lucas the entire time. We did bring water, a flashlight and food, but we made the mistake of starting at 6:15pm. About 3/4 the way up my little trooper Travis decided he was done hiking (I was amazed he got that far!). So I carried both of them the rest the way up. The climb was tough because of all the loose dirt, rocks and burnt trees lying in any path we chose. The mountain is called Twice Burnt Mountain for a reason. Here's the view. Our apartment building is in the middle of the photo towards near the foot of the mountain. At the base of the mountain in the distance is Santa Fe.

We made it to the top, took a little rest and then started back down. We were battling darkness on the trip down. In the photo below it was fairly dark out but because of the longer exposure photo it appears lighter. Off in the distance is the lab.

I carried Travis and Lucas the whole way down, which was quite tough as you can imagine. We were so glad to make it home safely. We got back to the car at 8pm, not bad that it only took us 1 hour 45 minutes.

We all enjoyed some juice and milk before going to bed. I will be pretty sore tomorrow!
